They have a new cookbook out, Marshes to Mansions. My sister has a few recipes in that one. It's odd that my sisters are in Junior League--it seems like such a grown up thing to do...then I remember that we are grown ups!

The biscuits, by the way, were great!

My mom, in Louisiana, sets up a flamingo tree every year for the last several years. It started half jokingly as a small tree in addition to the regular one, but seems to have become the centerpiece.

We got to visit with Patrick's Aunt Cecelia, Uncle Dan, and Cousin Dominique a couple weeks ago. They took us out for an amazing dinner, and showered Molly with gifts! Dominique gave Molly her cupcake house, and Molly loves it (actually, she and Ali both love it - Molly often yells at Ali to get out).

For those who haven't followed my last few posts, this morning, at 6 AM, Cincinnati Public Schools' magnet schools had open registration. We wanted to make sure we secured a slot for kindergarten. It is not uncommon for folks to camp out for days to get a slot. The one we targeted, Sands Montessori is a popular choice, with 65 applicants to all grades by the time registration opened.

I started my vigil at 1 PM the day before, in a tent. There were some who had been there since 11 AM the day before that. We were allowed to move inside at around 6 PM. It was a neat group of folks to sit around and talk to. We were all a bit punchy by the time registration was called.

And, we succeeded in getting my daughter registered!

The school is part of a community I think we want to be part of. The parent's organization fed us. The principle spent the night in her office with us (and her dog), so we'd be able to spend the night. Every parent I've met have seemed to be committed to their child's education.

It's this commitment I think makes the "lining up," first-come, first-serve method of application beneficial. By having the parents physically having to get some skin in the game--actually having to camp out, rather than write a check or participate in a lottery, you get the parents who are likely to be involved in other areas.

I'm glad that my wife and I are among those parents now.

But, for a free tent, it's doing quite well. Here in the Sands Montessori line, we have what my dad would call a "slow, soaking rain." setting up the tent on arrival was a good call.
